Forget rebellion: now they’re bargainers (17-07-2008)

Clashes of ideals and viewpoints are evident in each and every political party and this is much common nowadays as it was in the past. Whether the party adheres to the ideology of Marxism, Hindutva or Nationalism these aspects remain present. Even the international communist movement till now bears the memory of the clashes of Stalin and Trotsky! The same also became evident in the former years, especially in the 60s and 70s, between Namboodiripad and Basu in CPI (M).

However, the ongoing conflict between Karat & co and the Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee is devoid of any such clash of titans. On the contrary the whole issue is founded in the murky politics of parliamentary democracy. Well, the matter is quite simple. While Prakash Karat through his instruction wants to remove the last bastion of the party in the governmental arena, the Speaker through his defiant stand want to delight in the significance of the constitutional position. The greatest irony is that till now CPI (M) in its party philosophy and constitution retains the slogan of shunning parliamentary democracy, whenever necessary!

But it seems that Chatterjee, who is learnt to wage overt and covert attempts against the party leadership on this issue, will not be ready to accept defeat so easily. His this consideration made him visit the nonagenarian Jyoti Basu in Calcutta, who still exerts a strong influence on the thought process of the party. But through all these it is clear that the party is virtually divided into two warring factions. While one is against the collapse of the government, the other minority group of hard hitting and self-styled hardliners is trying best to bring the end of the government.

Whoever wins the party will be the worst loser. Karl Marx will surely have a jolt in his grave!
